Lavender throughout the Centuries

Lavender has biblical roots. It is referred to as Spikenard in the Bible and was used by Mary to bath the Baby Jesus.
During the Renaissance Lavender was used to protect against infections during the Plague. Lavender has natural insect repellent properties and the Plague was spread by insects.
English royalty were fond of Lavender during the Victorian era.
Queen Victoria appointed an official Lavender purveyor.The floors in the castle hallways were sprinkled with Lavender so that when people would walk on them it would release the wonderful sent from the Lavender buds.Queen Victoria’s Love and passion for Lavender encouraged all fine English ladies to scent themselves and their homes with Lavender.
During World War I, Lavender was used as a wound dressing for wounded soldiers.
